Things to know about nail fungus

Nails are much more relevant than we think as they serve a valuable purpose in indicating our general health condition. Our nails, particularly the toenails are exposed to numerous impurities that may cause fungal infections in and around the nail. These are normally found to affect those in their older ages or people with lower immunity conditions. Nail infections can be painful and chronic. Although they can be treated with home remedies in some cases, it is usually advised to seek medical intervention to avoid worsening it.

How to identify nail fungus?

  • The infection usually sets at the nail edges and gradually grows into the entire nail.
  • The infected nail develops a yellowish tint and appears to be moved up.
  • There could be a mild darkening of the nail with the accumulation of dirt like particles under the nail.
  • The area can become foul smelling.
  • The nails grow disfigured and dry and lose the sheen associated with healthy nails.
  • Furthermore, the nail turns frangible, cracking at first opportunity while the areas around the damaged nail can be inflamed with soreness.

Causes of nail disorders
Bacteria and fungi are commonly present in the body, both internally and externally. These fungi continuously grow in certain conditions leading to a full-blown infection, affecting the toenails specifically.

Fungal Bacillus named Onychomycosis, which basically belong to the larger family of fungi named as dermatophytes is a cause of nail infection. More often referred to as tinea unguium, these fungi impinge the toenails and fingernails when the environment is conducive for its multiplication. The fungus slowly invades the skin around the nails and builds in intensity gradually. It grows over time and tends to remain unobserved by most people. Typically, these fungi flourish in warm and moist climatic conditions, which can provide a fertile ground for them to become overcrowded, therefore infecting the particular area. Other dermatological conditions like Athlete’s foot and jock itch are also caused by the same fungus. Just as any other viral or bacterial infection that may spread with physical contact, nail fungus may be contagious and contracted from another infected person. So it is advisable to ensure that nail clippers or fillers are sanitized before use, to avoid possible infection. The fungal infections are predominantly found to occur among the older age groups since the possibility of dry nail conditions with cracks is greater. Sweaty socks may also be a very significant source of developing nail disorders, owing to the moisture ridden feet area and the shoe which be an active carrier of such fungus.

A nail fungal infection, though not a very concerning health condition, cannot be ignored especially by those with diabetes or fragile immunity diseases. Since it is a progressive condition, most people may not seek medical attention immediately, but experiment with various home remedies and over-the-counter medication available in pharmacies before visiting the dermatologist. If the infection does not get treated with home remedies after a week or so, it is recommended to visit a doctor at the earliest.
