Houseplants are a lovely addition to the home. They can brighten a space as well as clean the air. However, some plants are toxic for cats. Many cats love chewing on plants, and they won’t realize that a new plant isn’t as safe to eat as say, cat grass. Always check that whatever plant you’re thinking of bringing into your home is safe for your furry friends. This list will cover toxic houseplants for cats:

1. Aloe plant
Aloe Vera is a wonderful medicinal plant for humans. The gel is great for soothing burns and the plants are relatively easy to grow. However, it can cause stomach upset if your cat chews on it. The clear gel inside the leaf isn’t toxic for cats, however the latex produced by the plant can cause vomiting or diarrhea.

2. Lilies
While many types of lilies can be a bit dangerous for dogs, lilies are one of the most toxic houseplants for cats. The lily has over 90 varieties, and all are toxic to cats. The bloom itself can cause kidney failure in cats. Other symptoms include drooling, fatigue, and vomiting. Don’t bring any variety of lily plants into your home if you have cats.

3. Cerimen
Also known as the swiss cheese plant or the cutleaf philodendron, these popular plants are dangerous for cats as well as dogs. They can cause drooling, oral irritation and burning, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.

4. Tomato plants
Tomatoes can be a very easy plant to grow indoors, but they are very toxic to cats. Not only is the fruit one that commonly turns up on lots of human food cats can’t have, but all parts of the plant can cause poisoning if ingested. Symptoms include diarrhea, confusion, drooling, weakness, behavioral change, and slow heart rate.

5. Corn plant
This common plant is known by a few names including ribbon plant, dracaena, cornstalk plant, and dragon tree. Symptoms of poisoning for this plant include dilated pupils, drooling, depression, lack of appetite, and vomiting that can include blood.

6. Sago palm
The Sago Palm is a beautiful plant, but every part of the plant is dangerous for cats and other animals. It is one of the worst plants for pet toxicity. It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, liver failure, and death.

7. Pothos
Also known as devil’s ivy, this plant is popular because it is easy to grow. However, it can cause vomiting and diarrhea if ingested.

8. Tulips
Tulips are very popular flowers. However, the bulbs are very toxic to cats. Symptoms include severe gastrointestinal irritation, drooling, loss of appetite, depression of the central nervous symptoms, convulsions, and cardiac abnormalities.

9. Azaleas
Azaleas and all members of the rhododendron family contain grayanotoxins. If your cat ingests any part of the plant, the symptoms can include vomiting, drooling, weakness, diarrhea, and depression of the central nervous system. Severe azalea poisoning can result in death from cardiovascular collapse.

10. Oleander
Nerium oleander is very dangerous for cats. All parts contain glycosides that cause serious symptoms if ingested. These symptoms include gastrointestinal irritation, hypothermia, abnormal heart function, and death.
